Will Aisha Al-Hassan dance for us again?

Aisha Jummai Al-Hassan has been nominated for a ministerial position by President Muhammadu Buhari, with the Senate expected to hold confirmation hearings on Tuesday.

Al-Hassan of the All Progressives Congress (APC) came close to becoming Nigeria’s first (s)elected female governor in Taraba State, but was defeated by Darius Ishaku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a rerun on 25 April this year. She was a PDP senator from 2011 before defecting to the APC.

As a senator, Al-Hassan and the two other senators from Taraba State were instrumental in scuppering the Senate’s confirmation of Obadiah Ando as a ministerial nominee from their state in 2011. They claimed at the time that their constituents were not satisified with Ando’s performance as Minister for Water Resources in the previous administration.

Al-Hassan danced on the Senate floor as Ando’s nomination was rejected. She said then: “I am happy because Ando’s rejection is a victory for Taraba people”.

Now she has to face the hurdle of a confirmation hearing and this is made worse by the fact that all three senators from her state are from the opposition PDP.

The Senate has insisted that ministerial nominees must be supported by at least two out of the three senators from their states.

On Tuesday, we will see if Al-Hassan will be dancing again with joy if she scales through the confirmation, or whether it ends in tears.
