A source close to the former Senator for Imo North and one time candidate for the governorship, Ifeanyi Ararume, said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) politician spent a week in Owerri this month and was shocked to see hundreds of people besiege his home in desperate need of food.
State public sector workers have not been paid for months, ranging from four to nine, and the situation is worse for pensioners, with some being owed their pensions for up to 14 months. The state is said to have come to a “standstill” because many businesses are losing custom from workers without pay.
The source said Ararume was having “two bags” of rice cooked everyday for a week at his home for the multitude that kept trooping in.
The former senator, once of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has complained about the dire situation to governor Rochas Okorocha. He informed the governor that “nothing will happen” and “things are not moving” in the state without workers getting paid. But his complaints have fallen on deaf ears.
