The former governor of Ekiti State Kayode Fayemi, nominated for a ministerial position by President Muhammadu Buhari, may not receive the backing of the three senators from his state during the Senate confirmation hearings scheduled for Tuesday next week.
Fayemi, who many tip to become Nigeria’s foreign minister, faces the prospect of having his fate decided by the three Peoples Democratic Party senators from his state: Duro Faseyi (Ekiti North), Fatimat Raji-Rasaki (Ekiti Central) and Biodun Olujimi (Ekiti South). A source has revealed that all three senators have claimed that they “don’t know who Fayemi is”.
Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) failed to get re-elected as governor last year, losing to the PDP’s Ayo Fayose. However, Fayose has called for the Ekiti’s PDP senators to support Fayemi during the confirmation hearings: “Ekiti is my priority. I call on all the House of Representatives members and senators that went to Abuja from here, some people petitioned the National Assembly stating how Fayemi sank Ekiti into heavy debts, I have told the members not to do that”.
According to rules introduced by the Senate, any ministerial nominee should be supported by at least two of the three senators from his state and be cleared by the Senate committee on public petitions.
It is not clear whether governor Fayose was playing to the gallery with his call for support for Fayemi and whether such a call would fall on deaf ears.
