Amaechi is getting desperate

Rotimi Amaechi, the former governor of Rivers State, who has been nominated for a ministerial position by President Muhammadu Buhari, is running scared that he may not scale through the Senate confirmation.

Ever since he defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Amaechi has been fighting a protracted battle with the man who replaced him as governor, Eze Wike. Wike has vowed to expose Amaechi’s corruption in office and there is an ongoing judicial inquiry into the Amaechi administration and several corruption petitions against him.

To make matters worse for Amaechi, the Senate has decided that each ministerial nominee must have the support of at least two senators from his state and should be cleared by the Senate committee on public petitions. All three senators from Rivers State are from the PDP and are Wike’s allies. One of them, Senator George Sekibo (PDP Rivers East) has already submitted a petition from his constituents against Amaechi, detailing his corrupt dealings.

Sekibo and the two other senators from Rivers State, Olaka Nwogu (PDP, Rivers S/East) and Osinakachukwu Ideozu (PDP,Rivers West) arrived in London on Thursday night. Last night, an Amaechi delegation went to see them to beg for “a soft landing” for Amaechi during the senate confirmation hearings. A source among the delegation informed us that Amaechi also wanted the delegation to plead with the three senators for “no more petitions” against him.

The source also claimed that another Amaechi delegation had gone to plead with Wike.

It was not clear at the time of writing whether Amaechi had succeeded in appeasing Wike, Sekibo and company.
