A source in Abuja has revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari met last month with Senate President Bukola Saraki and told him that Rotimi Amaechi, the former governor of Rivers State, must be confirmed as a minister by the Senate.
This flies against the president’s public statements about not interfering in the work of the legislature.
Buhari said Saraki “must make sure that Amaechi is not left behind” and he should be confirmed because he was “instrumental” in Buhari becoming president.

The president stressed that it was about “give and take”, implying that Saraki should do his part and leave the president to do his. The source interpreted this as meaning that if Saraki ensured that Amaechi sailed through the confirmation hearing, the president would make sure that Saraki’s troubles with corruption allegations would be over.
Buhari said that there was no way he was going to leave out Amaechi from his cabinet. Amaechi eventually scaled through the confirmation hearing, despite the objections of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators.
