Nigeria’s new foreign minister Geoffrey Jideofor Onyeama celebrated his elevation into President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet yesterday at the Hilton in Abuja.

Onyeama, a Cambridge-trained lawyer from Eke in Enugu State, was joined by friends, family and well-wishers at the gathering after being sworn in as Nigeria’s top diplomat.

Interestingly, also at the party was Osita Okechukwu aka “High Number”, who was tipped to be the ministerial nominee from Enugu State, until Onyeama displaced him on the list. Okechukwu is also an indigene of Eke and put on a happy face at the occasion.

Other guests included Senate Deputy President Ike Ekweremadu, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also from Enugu State.

Ekweremadu didn’t know who Onyeama was when his name first read out on the floor of the Senate as the Enugu State nominee. He knows him now well enough to join in the celebration.

All three PDP senators eventually supported Onyeama’s nomination.

The former Minister for Power Barth Nnaji, also from Enugu State, showed up. Nnaji also hoped he would be recalled to the cabinet by President Buhari.
