APC regrets over Buhari

There is disgruntlement within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over the 10 month old administration of Muhammadu Buhari. The complaints cover the president’s style of governance, the way things are going in the country and a host of other areas of discontent.

A top APC source indicated that he “has never seen Nigeria so bad” as fuel scarcity, electricity blackouts and foreign exchange controls combined with the low price of oil to bring the economy to its knees. He said that while the president concentrates on his much-ballyhooed anti-corruption fight, all “aspects of governance have been ignored”.

The source said that the president is “very stubborn” even though he “doesn’t understand” much about governing, which he has left to his “inner circle”. The president is said to be “not comfortable” with people he hasn’t known for a long time and also not comfortable with “new ideas”.

According to the source, Goodluck Jonathan, the former president, “seemed to understand Nigeria better” and knew that you had to allow some corruption to continue because corrupt people were significant players in the economy. Buhari’s anti-corruption rhetoric has scared some people and some opportunities for “stealing” public funds have been “blocked”. However, the source claimed that most of the “stealing” is now being done by Buhari’s “inner circle” and “they don’t let the money out” to others outside the circle.

This is leading to discontentment and the source said most APC bigwigs have decided to “just let Buhari serve his four years and go” and it should be “no more than that”. The president is also said to “not see himself as APC”. Buhari first ran for president under the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in 2003 and by the (s)election of 2011 he belonged to the Congress of Progressive Change (CPC).

The APC is a coalition of members from those parties and Alliance for Democracy (AD)/Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and disgruntled members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Buhari is said to prefer the company and advice of his old ANPP/CPC colleagues.

The source said that Buhari has refused to get involved in saving Senate President Bukola Saraki from the embarrassment of a Code of Conduct Tribunal trial for false declaration of assets mainly because he sees Saraki as a PDP person, and slightly because he is happy for Saraki to pay for going against the APC’s wishes and contesting for the Senate presidency. But despite the enmity for Saraki among the old AD/ACN ranks within the APC, the source claims that Buhari is “nonchalant” towards the Senate President and couldn’t care less how the case goes.
