The road from Enugu to Onitsha is, depending on whether you are in Nigeria, the UK or the US, an “expressway”, “motorway” or “freeway”.
It is also what is called a “federal road” in Nigeria. This means it is the responsibility of the federal government to maintain the road, as it links states and two major cities in southeastern Nigeria.
This video was shot on the road and makes depressing viewing.
Several Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidents from Olusegun Obasanjo to Goodluck Jonathan have won (s)elections in the two states that the road cuts across – Anambra and Enugu. None of these presidents saw it fit with “rewarding” the voters by ensuring this critical road is fit for purpose.
